Did you ever read Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill? Well, if you don’t want to change in your life, don’t read this book, but if you are looking for ways to change and answers, you might want to consider reading this book more than once!
About Think and Grow Rich
“Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill was the first book I read on personal development. This book totally changed my mind. It was the beginning of a new rich world for me. I felt as if I had just opened a new window into my mind, as if I was in a total darkness inside and through this book, I could seriously improve my life. …I could even become rich! (My previous reads were all about engineering.)
This is a book written in the 1930’s and having sold more than 20 million copies and is on the bestseller lists even nowadays! Clearly we are talking about a unique book that changed and changes the lives of millions of people!
There are 13 principles to be mastered through Hill’s philosophy. They can be applied for anything, not just getting rich. Those are: Desire, Faith, Auto-suggestion, Specialized knowledge, Imagination, Organized planning, Decision, Persistence, the Power of the master mind, the Mystery of sex transmutation, the Subconscious mind, the Brain, and the Sixth sense. Let’s briefly see each one:
Desire is not about wishing but it’s about really wanting something. You have desire ONLY when you truly want something and throughout your day you consciously and subconsciously are working towards what you desire. Your goals must be specific, with definite deadlines and action plans towards them. Action plans should be revised regularly and corrective actions should be taken accordingly/regularly.
Even though Napoleon Hill was not a religious man, he did value Faith and considered it essential with Desire in achieving one’s success. He believed it was not enough to just have the desire to doing something but having Faith that you can also do it was equally important. Having no doubt about you achieving your goals is equally important with your Desire and action plan towards them.
Auto – Suggestion
Auto-suggestion (or visualization) is very familiar to many people today. It’s the technique to support the principles of Desire and Faith through visualizing your goals daily; preferably every morning and every evening. So feeding your mind with what you want, before you even get there. But it’s not just about what you want; you should also render the services you should do in return of that. So, it’s not just about what you want to get, it should also be about what you give for it.
Specialized knowledge is another key principle because Hill believed that it’s not only your knowledge that matters but also your continuous learning and the surrounding of the right network of special people to help and improve and support you. If you want to become rich, it might be wise to hang around with rich people, don’t you think?
Imagination is the ingredient to give to your Desire and Faith and Auto-Suggestion their physical form. It’s actually the ignition of everything since it’s prior to desiring and believing in something that we first have invented through imagination in our mind. Imagine the riches prior to having them; imagine your success prior to achieving your success.
Clearly Organized Planning is so integral to the teachings of Napoleon Hill that he embedded it in his principle of Desire. He also explains the concepts of leaders and followers and their attributes. Getting rich is not easy, but surely organized planning instead of wasting time will help you become what you want to.
Decision is very closely related to the high values of leadership, based on Hill’s principles. When you have mastered the principle of Desire and gained Faith, the good leader can make quick decisions to stand by and lead people accordingly. Do you know any rich people that takes no decisions?
Persistence is the principle and action that reinforces Faith. Evolving from the principle of Faith, it is a state of mind that must be cultivated. To succeed you have to be persistent. Hardships will occur but being persistent to your goals and mission will get you there. Another rich man’s attribute!
Even though it is a difficult concept to comprehend, it is integral to all of Hill’s writings. It has to do with the para-psychological phenomenon of joining two minds into a third one, which becomes greater than their sum and even greater things, can be achieved because of that. Surrounding yourself with the right masterminds will increase your potentials for success. If becoming rich is what you want, the find out the right people to help you get there.
Hill argues successful men often have a very high sex drive. Therefore, harnessing that high sexual energy and redirecting it towards success, it will bring you success much faster! He does not say not to have sex, but instead to control it instead of letting it to consume you. Use that energy to become rich instead of…
The ultimate goal of Auto-Suggestion is controlling the Subconscious, but the Subconscious itself is of utmost importance because it will maintain Desire, Faith and Persistence. You can only have a dominant positive or negative emotion at any given time. Hill distinguishes the seven undesirable emotions as: fear, jealousy, hatred, revenge, greed, superstition and anger. And his seven desirable emotions to be: desire, faith, love, sex, enthusiasm, romance and hope. What dominates will influence your mind. So, chose wisely!
Hill’s view of the Infinite Intelligence is tied closely with how he views the brain. He views the brain as both a receiving and a sending station set; just like radio stations and receivers operate. Based on his theory, the stronger the positive emotions you have, the more vibrations of other minds via the ether can be received.
The sixth sense
This principle can only be understood (and practiced) by those that have mastered all the previous ones. It’s where everything gets in places: where there would be contact between the finite mind of man and Infinite Intelligence and where the man contacts the Universal Mind.
These are the thirteen principles and theory through Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich”. Some might be too extreme to conceive or even believe for most of us. But having read this book, going through the research behind it, I am a believer of his teachings. After all, this book is the condensed result of his years of researching the most successful people and the richest people of his time. That alone tells a lot to me.
So, if you do not want to become rich (or succeed in whatever it is you want), do not read this book. But it’s not just a matter of only reading …you’ve got to start applying!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on it and how did it affect you.
